Surge arrester OPN-110 is designed to protect the electrical equipment of switchgears from atmospheric and switching surges in electrical networks with a voltage of 110 kV AC, frequency 48 - 62 Hz with isolated or compensated neutral. Protection of electrical equipment of switchgears must protect all devices from overvoltages. The non-linear surge suppressor OPN-110 is a series-connected metal oxide varistors without spark gaps, enclosed in an insulating housing. The highly linear current-voltage characteristic of the varistors allows for a continuous and safe presence of the arrester under voltage, while providing a deep level of protection for electrical equipment in the event of surges. This type of surge arresters is recommended to be used instead of RVS-110 valve arresters in the design, operation and co-design of electrical installations.

The most important parameters when choosing an arrester
The highest long-term permissible operating voltage of the arrester is the highest effective value of the power frequency voltage that can be applied continuously to the arrester during its entire service life, and does not lead to damage or thermal instability of the arrester under normalized impacts.
The bandwidth of the surge arrester is the maximum value of a rectangular current pulse with a duration of 2000 μs (capacity current) normalized by the manufacturer. The surge arrester must withstand 18 such impacts with the accepted sequence of their application without loss of performance.
The rated voltage of the surge arrester is the effective value of the power frequency voltage that the arrester can withstand for 10 s during the operational test. The rated voltage must be at least 1.25 times the highest continuous operating voltage.
The remaining voltage of the surge arrester is the maximum voltage value at the arrester when a pulsed current flows through it with a given amplitude and pulse shape.

The design of the surge arrester OPN-110
Structurally, surge arrester OPN-110 is made of fiberglass jacket, rubber shell, flanges and varistors. The varistor is the basis of any surge arrester. The further operation of electrical equipment connected in parallel to it depends on its current-voltage characteristic. The varistor has a variable current-voltage characteristic: when exposed to industrial frequency current, it does not pass current, when exposed to lightning or switching overvoltages, the varistor of the surge arrester OPN-110 passes electric current, leaving the rated voltage of the network unchanged.
The varistor is made by pressing zinc oxide powder with a binder in the form of liquid glass or with another binder at a temperature of 1700°C. The end surfaces of the OPN-110 surge suppressor varistor are metallized with aluminum, and the side surface is covered with a dielectric. After manufacturing, the varistor is subjected to electrical discharges, after which its technical characteristics are stabilized, which are necessary for use in the OPN-110 surge arrester.
External partial discharges may appear on the surface of the OPN-110 surge arrester, which can close the power line to the ground. To prevent the appearance of external partial discharges, a shielding ring is installed in the upper part of the OPN-110 surge arrester, which allows to ensure the distribution of the magnetic field. The shielding ring of the surge arrester OPN-110 is presented in the form of an aluminum ring with fastening elements to the upper flange of the apparatus.

Advantages of arrester OPN-110 over arrester RVS-110
The surge arrester OPN-110 and the valve arrester RVS-110 are devices for protecting the equipment of electric circuits of substations. The purpose of both devices seems to be, but there are some differences: the RVS-110 valve arrester is designed to protect only against lightning surges, and the OPN-110 surge arrester - from lightning and switching surges.
The surge arrester OPN-110 and the arrester differ in design. The composition of the valve arrester includes working resistors, a block of spark gaps with shunt resistors. The overall height of the valve arrester RVS-110 is about 3 meters. Such dimensions make it necessary to manufacture devices of a collapsible design, which makes it possible to transport the devices in a vertical position.
Surge arrester OPN-110 is made of one-piece construction. There are no spark gaps in its design, and the working resistor is presented in the form of a varistor. The varistor replaces both spark gaps and coils. The overall height of the OPN-110 surge arrester is just over one meter, so it does not need to be made in a collapsible design.
At the same overvoltages, the surge arrester OPN-110 shows better results than the arrester. The disadvantage of the arrester is that over time, its spark gaps break through and the device cannot protect the equipment from a thunderstorm. Overvoltage arrester OPN-110 can withstand any number of lightning impacts throughout its entire service life, not exceeding its technical characteristics.
One of the advantages of the surge arrester OPN-110 is its resistance to shock and cyclic loads. Since the jacket of the RVS-35 valve arrester is made of porcelain, its body is not resistant to impacts. The height of the valve arrester may not be its best parameter, since the device may be destroyed by strong gusts of wind. Meanwhile, the OPN-110 surge arrester can easily withstand any wind effects due to its small windage.
Surge arrester OPN-110 is easier to install than a surge arrester. The arrester is mounted in a column of three elements. For its installation, special lifting equipment is required. To install the surge arrester, no lifting means are needed, since its weight and dimensions allow it to be installed manually. When installing both the surge arrester and the arrester, it is necessary to adhere to the safety rules. Only electrical personnel with an electrical safety group that allows work in installations with voltages over 1000 volts is allowed to perform installation work.
