Oil type distribution transformers are transformers that change the input and output voltage to 36 kV and 5000 kVA at given speeds, and cooling is provided by the transformer oil so that the heat generated during operation is removed by the transformer oil and does not exceed the allowable operating temperature. This type of transformers can be considered under 2 (two) main positions as hermetic and expansion tanks:
Sealed Oil Distribution Transformers
They are manufactured in the power range from 25 to 5000 kVA, high voltage level up to 36 kV, three- or single-phase, oil, free-cooling (ONAN), with no-load tap changer or on load tap changer, both for outdoor and for internal application. Oil sealed type distribution transformers are manufactured on the principle of preventing the atmosphere from contacting the cooling oil by balancing the oil pressure and atmospheric pressure at the desired temperature by vacuum filling with oil.
In sealed oil-type distribution transformers, the internal heat resulting from oil pressure changes due to thermal changes is controlled by the natural expansion and contraction of the boiler wave walls. Mechanical design and manufacturing are designed to withstand these forces.
Oil sealed type distribution transformers are lower in height than expansion tank type transformers. Therefore, it can be used in smaller areas.
Since the oil in sealed transformers does not come into contact with the atmosphere, it does not need to be changed at certain periods of time, as in transformers with an expansion tank.
Expansion tank transformer
Expansion tank transformers are similar to sealed transformers with their core and coil structure. The dimensions of the expansion tanks of this type of transformers are designed and manufactured as a result of calculations taking into account the expansion of the oil, the volume of which increases with temperature.
Since transformers with expansion tanks are open to the atmosphere, when the oil pressure changes due to thermal effects, air exchange is ensured by removing moisture from the air thanks to silica gel (air dryer) in the transformer tank.
As a result of air exchange caused by temperature differences, depending on the load of the transformer with an expansion tank included in the work, it loses its silica gel properties over time and causes the oil to hydrate and deteriorate its structure. For this reason, it is necessary to perform maintenance such as replacing the silica gel at certain periods and measuring the puncture stress by taking samples from the oil.
